Mosul

Mosul
In ancient times an important Assyrian city located about 250 miles (396 km) northwest of modern Baghdad. The site of Mosul, on the right bank of the Tigris River, was inhabited as early as 6000 b.c. But it apparently remained a village until the Assyrians erected a fortress-citadel there to help guard their capital of Nineveh, which stood across the river. In the 500s b.c., following Nineveh's fall, Mosul grew into a prominent commercial center and remained a major city in the region thereafter. Muslim armies captured it in a.d. 637, and in the following century it became the capital of Muslim-controlled Mesopotamia. Today Mosul is Iraq's second-largest city after Baghdad, with a population of nearly 2 million. The ruins of both ancient Nineveh and ancient Mosul lie within the modern city's limits.
